Handling of WATER PUMP
1.Before replacing Water Pump
- A person with specialist knowledge should perform the replacement.
Even if the water pump breaks or does not break, the other parts that are related to the water pump may break. - Please find the correct water pump by the information of applicable model, year, part number etc.
Wrong water pump will cause damage and overheating, if can be installed. - Please do not shock the water pump.
A water pump consists of many precision parts, such as a bearing and a mechanical seal. If a blow is dealt with a hammer etc. at the time of installaton, the leak and/or damage to the bearing will occurs. - Please do not perform replacement, when engine is hot.
The hot coolant will scald you. Please begin to replace after it gets cold completely. - When the engine is hot, please put neither cold water nor a cold cooling liquid into the engine or the radiator.
Mechanical seal and engine parts will be damaged by rapid temperature change. - Please do not start the engine without coolant.
It damages the machanical seal and a leak occurs. - Please do not stand near the fan during engine rotation.
If rotation parts, such as a fan, are damaged during engine rotation, they fly in all directions and can cause serious injury to person in the vicinity.
2.Replacement Preparation
- Please check whether there is any leak from places other than the water pump (radiator, radiator hose, heater core, etc.).
A leak also can occur from other parts besides the water pump. - Please check the fan, fan clutch, pulley, fan belt, radiator cap, thermostat, etc.
Noise and/or failures in cooling system can be generated also from other than water pump. - The timing belt and belt tensioner should also be checked for replacement in the case of the water pump being driven by the timing belt.
- When the engine is hot, please put neither cold water nor cold cooling liquid into the engine or the radiator.
Mechanical seal and engine parts will be damaged by rapid temperature change.
3. Replacement Procedures
I.Draining of cooling water

Please remove the drain plug of the cylinder block and extract the coolant completely. And flush all waterways.
Please screw up the drain plug tight with the torque specified by the car maker.
II.Removal of water pump

Please remove the old water pump from the engine block.
Be careful not to damage the screw threads of the cylinder block.
III.Removal

Please remove the old gasket remaining in the cylinder block cleanly with a scraper etc.
Be careful not to crack or damage the attachment face. It will be the cause of a leak.
IV.Attachment of water pump
Please attach the gasket and/or O ring between the engine block and the water pump.
Please screw the bolt equally tight on a diagonal direction.
Please tighten the bolt with the torque specified by the car maker.
Please check if it will rotate by hand lightly by turning around the flange hub of the water pump.
Please fit the fan belt after water pump attachment.
Please adjust the tension of the fan belt to the specified tension of the car maker.
V.Filling of coolant
Please put new coolant or distilled water into engine after water pump replacement at a suitable concentration for the climate.
Hard water with high mineral concentration, water with impurities and acid water cause cavitation and/or unusual corrosion. Distilled water should be used to mix with the antifreeze.
After putting in the coolant, please check whether there is a rise in temperature of the engine by checking if the needle of the water thermometer goes up and also check the rotation of the fan when it reaches the temperature that the fan has to rotate.
*At starting engine the engine hood should be shut. If rotatating parts, such as a fan, are damaged, they fly in all directions and can cause serious injury to person in the vicinity.
When the needle of the water thermometer does not go up to show the temperature rise of the engine and the fan does not rotate, the shortage of coolant can be considered. Please top up the coolant in engine. Moreover, since coolant decreases in amount immediately after replacement, please top up coolant.
* Please open the radiator cap after the engine cools completely, if a radiator cap is opened when engine is hot, the coolant will spray out and you can be scalded.
Handling explanation of UNIVERSAL JOINT
1.Before replacing Universal Joint
- A person who has special knowledge should perform the replacement.
"Even if the universal joint breaks or doesnft break, the other parts that are related to the universal joint may break." - Please check the application for the universal joint.
Using a different part number will cause damage and overheating. - Please do not shock the universal joint.
A universal joint consists of a precision bearing. If a blow is dealt with a hammer etc. at the time of attachment, poor rotation and damage to the bearing will occur. - Please do not perform replacement when engine is running.
"It leads to unexpected accidents, such as being caught in the rotation process."
2. Replacement Preparation
- Please check other areas besides the universal joint (please check whether the center bearing, a sliding yoke, etc. all fit perfectly)
- If all universal joint's center bearings are checked and if it doesn't fit and has abnormalities, please replace the driveshaft with a different kind.
3. Replacement Procedures
I. Removal of the driveshaft.
Please mark the flange yoke and slide yoke.
Please mark firmly with an oily pen etc. so that the mark does not disappear and you can match up the markings during replacement.
Please remove the driveshaft from the drive line of the flange yoke side.
Please check to see if there is a run-out from the driveshaft, and if it exceeds the manufacturer's regulation limit, replace it.
(When the driveshaft has a crack and is damaged, please replace it.)
II. Removal of universal joint
Please remove the grease nipple and snap ring.
Please push out bearing, just before the Spider touches the yoke.
(Warning: do not to crack the yoke and spline part. Please perform using a press machine, etc. )
III. Attachment of a. universal joint
Please insert the Spider in the yoke and press the case by using a vice from both sides. (Press to a snap ring groove)
Notes: Please check whether the needle roller within the case has fallen before pressing the case in the yoke. If the needle roller has fallen, case pressing will become poor and it will lead to an unexpected accident during a run. Notes: Please do not apply power to the dent of the outisde of the case at the time of pressing. It becomes the cause of damage or early breakage. Notes: Please do not crack the oil seal part of the case at the time of pressing. It becomes the cause of early breakage.
Please attach snap ring in snap ring groove.
(A brand new snap ring should be used.)
Please strike the yoke with a plastic hammer so that there is no gap between case and snap ring.
N
otes: Please do not strike, so that the yoke changes.
Please check if the yoke moves smoothly when it rotates
Please attach the grease nipple.
IV. Attachment of driveshaft
Please remove dirt, rust, etc. from the related part of a flange part, spline part, and yoke attachment of a yoke.
Please attach driveshaft in the drive line from the sliding yoke side.
(Please attach according to the mark before removal, )
(Please screw the bolt equally tight on a diagonal line. )
(Please screw the bolt with the torque specified by a car maker) Notes: A method, such as the attaching method, the oil dispensing method, etc. differs from each other for every maker and type of a car. Please refer to the maintenance manual of car manufacturer.

WATER PUMP
Leak
Q: Why does the water pump leak from the line where the water pump is fitted to the engine block?
A1: One cause is old gasket material remaining in the engine block. Please remove old gasket material totally when replacing.
A2: Another cause is scratch. Be careful when replacing so that the water pump face to the engine block doesn't get scratched or damaged.
A3: Another cause is the incorrect bolting of the water pump to the engine block. Please screw tightly with the correct amount of torque specified by the car maker in a diagonal pattern to ensure the even spread of load.
Q: Why does it weep (very littele amount) from the small hole of the water pump right after replacement?
A: It is the characteristic of the mechanical seal. Seepage is not a failure, when noticed shortly after fitting.
Q: Why does it leak from the hole of the Water Pump some time after fitting?
A: Dust, rubbish and/or impurities broke into the mechanical seal inside. Please clean waterways, such as engine and radiator, when replacing water pump, and new coolant should be used.
Q: Why does it leak from the hose joint?
A: Slack clamping of the hose band is the cause. Please refasten the hose band. Moreover, please check the radiator hose etc. when replacing the water pump. If there is a crack or deformation, then replace it too.
Q: Why does it leak from the radiator, heater core, Etc.
A: Internal corrosion can be considered. Please fix.
When replacing the water pump, use a new coolant of with the correct concentration and suitable for the geography and the climate.
Distilled water should be used to mix. "Hard water" with high mineral concentration, water with impurities, and acid water cause cavitation and/or unusual corrosion.
Noise
Q: What is this clear sound when a new water pump is rotated by hand?
A: It is the "stick phenomenon" . It occurs because the machining accuracy at producing the ceramic sheet and carbon which are the part of mechanical seal is securely maintained. The sound will disappear after water pump replacement and new
coolant topping up.
Q: Why does a fan belt make noise.
A1: The belt tension is not suitable.
Please adjust the tension specified by the car maker.
It leads to early breakage of water pump bearing when the belt is stretched at too much tension.
A2: Please check cracks on the belt.
Need to replace, if the crack is found.
Moreover, when replacing the water pump, please check other parts too such as the fan clutch, fan belt pulley for possible anomalies.
A3: There is a vibration noise from a fan, a pulley, etc.
A4: Incorrect bolting torque of the water pump, fan clutch, and the fan can be considered.
Please screw bolts tightly using the torque specified by the car maker.
If the bolts are bent, crushed on thread and/or extended, they need to be replaced.
Others
Q: Overheating
A1: Coolant does not circulate. Please make sure that the amount of coolant is sufficient. If not enough, add more.
A2: The coolant passages, such as the radiator and the hose, may be blocked.
Please clean waterways, such as engine, radiator, and hose, when replacing water pump, and new coolant should be used.
A3: The thermostat is not working.
Please do not forget to check the thermostat each time you replace water pump.
A4: The radiator cap may not be working. Please do not forget to check the radiator cap each time you replace water pump.
A5: The fan clutch may not be working. Please check the fan clutch, and if out of order, replace it. Please do not forget to check the fan clutch when replacing water pump.
A6: The fan motor is not working. Please check the fan motor and the electric circuit, and if not working, replace and repair. Please check also the fan motor when replacing waterpump.
A7: The unusual corrosion of the impeller is generated by cavitation (air bubbles). When replacing the water pump, new coolant of high quality with the correct concentration and suitable for the geography and climate should be used.
Distilled water should be used to mix. "Hard water" with high mineral concentration, water with impurities, and acid water cause cavitation and unusual corrosion.
UNIVERSAL JOINT
Noise
Q: Noise from universal joint
A1: The shortage of grease in bearing can be considered. Please add grease that is brand new and of good quality.
A2: When fitting the bearing to a yoke and spider, foreign substances can enter the bearing. Please apply new grease for bearing and spider after washing with washing oil or replace with a new universal joint.
A3: The clearance of bearing can not be suitable. Please check whether the diameter of the yoke has any modification. And if it is found out of specifications, replace the yoke with a brand new one.
Q: Noise from Driveshaft
A1: The shortage of grease of the slide part of the driveshaft. Add grease that is brand new and of good quality.
A2: The rotation balance of the driveshaft is not right. Please measure using the measuring method specified by the car maker. And if it is found out of specifications, re-balance or replace it.
A3: The markings checked before disassembly do not match. Please match up and in line with the mark.
A4: The universal joint bearing is not fitted properly. Please check whether the bearing fitment conditions and the snap ring of each bearing are settled in position.
Vibration
Q: Why vibration comes out of the universal joint/driveshaft?
A1: The rotation balance of the driveshaft is not right. Please measure using the measuring method specified by the car maker, and if it is found out of specifications, replace it.
A2: The markings checked before disassembly do not match. Please match up in line with the mark.
A3: The universal joint bearing is not constructed properly. Please check whether the fitment condition and the snap ring of each bearing are settled correctly.
Generation of heat
Q: Why is the heat generated within the universal joint / driveshaft?
A1: The shortage of grease in bearing can be considered. Please add grease that is brand new and of good quality.
A2: It is thought that the clearance of bearing is not suitable. Please check whether the diameter of the yoke has any modifications. And if it is found out of specification, replace the yoke with a brand new one.
A3: The shortage of grease of the slide part of driveshaft. Add grease that is brand new and of good quality.
Others
Q: Why does a new bearing cup not reach to the position?
A1: The bearing cup may have the needle roller fallen inside. Please remove bearing and check inside cup.
A2: When fitting the bearing to a yoke and spider, foreign substances can enter the bearing. Please apply new grease for bearing and spider after washing with washing oil or replace with a new universal joint.
